The autopsy at the state-run hospital failed to give the family any solace either since the cause of death was withheld till further analysis. Sources close to the investigation said the doctors did not find any injuries on Khan's body. "The viscera samples have been preserved. They will be sent for chemical as well as histopathological analysis, which the doctors believe could throw some light on whether hypertension had any role to play in the death," the source said.
The Kasturba Marg police allege Khan had hypertension, a claim contested by her family. The family said Khan had no history of heart trouble. The autopsy is silent on that too. "Only a close look at the tissues in the histopathological examination could give an answer," the source said.
A native of Uttar Pradesh, Khan (27) was staying with her 12-year-old son in Mira Road. She had separated from her husband, who is a policeman in UP.
Khan's five sisters said she had never worked for a living before. It was her son's rising education expenses that had pushed her to take up a job at Ellora a little over a fortnight ago. The son was not informed of Khan's death till late Sunday.
"We were told that Shaba was manhandled along with the other bar girls, but we were not permitted to check the body for injuries," said Khan's older sister Masrat. "We waited at the Borivli post-mortem centre from 8am, but nobody told us why the autopsy was being delayed. When we protested and demanded that the body be moved to J J Hospital, they sent it there in an ambulance at 3pm."
A senior doctor from the Borivli post-mortem centre blamed the Kasturba Marg police for the delay in deciding whether or not to carry out the autopsy.
"The police wanted the body and injuries, if any, to be photographed and so some time was lost in arranging for a photographer. Later, they wanted the autopsy videographed. That anyway is the protocol in high profile cases and custodial deaths," said the senior doctor. "They also insisted on a panel of doctors to carry out the post-mortem. Such panels can only be formed at the state-run JJ Hospital, which is also a referral centre."
