MUMBAI: A diary farm owner and his six accomplices were recently arrested for allegedly stealing only SUV (Tavera) from city and selling it in Rajasthan with fake documents and registration numbers. The interstate gang stole the SUV with the growing tourism demand from this vehicle in Rajasthan. The kingpin has been using his Honda City car to do recce of the city and find out Tavera parked on the roadside before the vehicle is stolen, said the MIDC police.

Acting on a tip-off received on August 8 that a group is fleeing out of the city and has taken the MIDC-Andheri route after stealing with a Tavera from MIDC locality. The deputy commissioner of police (Zone X) Mohankumar Dahikar formed a team of MIDC police senior inspector SL Hujband, inspector Naresh Kasle and nabbed Shaukat Khan (27), Abdul Khan (23) and Juman Khan (23) - all from Rajasthan.

The trio's arrest further led to the arrest of the kingpin Abid Sardarbaliwala (36) from his Nagpada resident from central part of the city and three more - Kamil Ansari (58), Azgar Moosa (34) and Sayyed Mandal (25)- from the Nagpada locality on August 15. "Sardarbaliwala plans the theft after his accomplices in Mumbai identifies Tavera parked in the locality. He asks the first three arrested accused, who hails from Rajasthan, to come to Mumbai to drive away with the stolen SUV. After the stealing the vehicle the accused hides it in the city for two days so that the cops think that the vehicle has been driven out of the city before they drives it away to Rajasthan," said Hujband.

Explaining the modus operandi, Kasle said, "After identifying the vehicle to be stolen, Sardarbaliwala accompanies his accomplices in his sedan. He parks his sedan behind the Tavera that they are going to steal. One of the accomplices pulls out the rear door lock of the Tavera and makes a duplicate key in less than five minutes and drives away with the SUV."

After keeping the stolen vehicle hidden in the city for two days, the accused makes fake documents - RTO paper, RC book and police NOC - before it is sold in Rajasthan. "Sardarbaliwala was running the gang under his dairy farm business that he has been running for the last 12 years in the city," said the police.
