Come Saturday and Sunday from 10 pm to 6am the civic body will work round-the-clock, to demolish a foot over bridge at Sukh Sagar in Girgaum, in record time.
Traffic police officials opined that demolishing the dilapidated foot overbridge at Girgaum Chowpatty will bring a much needed reprieve for large Ganpati processions this month. This is because the processions had to take a long winded route for immersion at Chowpatty so as to avoid the bridge.
The demolition of the bridge, which happens to be over three decades old, will take place between 11 pm to 6 am on Saturday and again on Sunday during the same time.
"The demolition will take place at night when the volume of vehicular traffic is the least. Motorists won't be inconvenienced too much. We want to make it clear that the entire stretch of Marine Drive (north- and south-bound lanes) will remain open for traffic during daytime," said NB Patil, senior inspector of Tardeo traffic police outpost.
During the demolition, traffic from Walkeshwar and Peddar Road will be diverted towards Churchgate from the RTI junction via Opera House. "Parking will be provided on Maharshi Karve Road," said a traffic police official.
An NOC for the demolition was given to the BMC by the traffic cops earlier this week.
"At present it is deteriorated and we are demolishing only the super structure. Whether it should be an iconic bridge or whether it should be a subway is under consideration. We have appointed a consultant and suggested that the sub-structures and columns will be untouched. The deck and staircase will be demolished which are in a bad conditions. We will work in the night using modern technology, so that least inconvenience is caused to the public. Otherwise, it would have taken 10 days if we adopted a conventional method," said S O Kori, chief engineer, bridges.
Kori said this is being done keeping in mind the safety of the public. The Marine Drive beautification committee has suggested that the two bridges Sukh Sagar and Patel bridge need to be removed and subway be constructed alternately.
