MUMBAI: Maharashtra government has signed an memorandum of understanding (MoU) with one of the insurance company to extend Rajiv Gandhi Jeevandayee Arogya Yojana (RGJAY) to extend the insurance scheme for the entire state.

The RGJAY is an insurance scheme started by the government for families earning less than Rs 1 lakh per year. Under the scheme the state government pays the premium for insurance cover up to Rs 1.5 lakh.

Last week the MoU was signed between the insurance company and the ruling Congress-NCP government. "Within next two months all families below poverty line and above poverty line will be covered under the scheme," a senior health department official said.

In July 2012, the scheme was launched on pilot basis in eight districts of Maharashtra. After successful implementation of the scheme in first phase, the ruling DF government decided to roll out the scheme for the entire state and accordingly the MoU was signed, said Suresh Shetty, public health minister.
