Under pressure to improve the quality of Mumbai roads, chief minister Prithviraj Chavan on Friday took a dig at the Shiv Sena-ruled BMC for not doing enough to rid the city of potholes. Instead the saffron party is busy scuttling existing monitoring system in place to periodically review condition of roads.

"The civic standing committee chairman recently offered to resign. What will they get out of it? Instead, they should introspect on finding long-term measures," said Chavan. He added that the committee had even tried to clear a proposal restricting the use of third-party audit for road works. , which was introduced under pressure from the state government last year.

"The third-party audit had found that there was not enough supervision in the BMC over roads works," . This is leading to poor quality of work and tenders being awarded to the same contractors over and over again," the CM said.
