MUMBAI: Farmers and fishermen of Gorai-Manori-Utan have intensified their fight against the state government's plan to develop the belt as a tourism zone.

Villagers have been opposing the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority's (MMRDA) draft development plan published in November 2011 which sought to convert around 10,000 acres in the Gorai-Manori-Utan belt into tourism development zone. In the first phase, MMRDA plans to develop 4,250 acres.

Villagers intensified their protest as they fear the government will come out with a resolution declaring the belt as tourism zone without taking their objections into consideration. Over 20,000 objections have been send to the government but we fear that our views will not be addressed, " said Lourdes D'souza, secretary of the Dharavi Beth Bachao Samiti, an organisation formed to oppose the project.

D'souza said that they were opposed to the draft plan which categorically states that the tourism currently provided by the locals are of inferior quality. She said that villagers have been noticing unknown people coming to the belt and clicking photographs and gathering details from locals. Villagers have been told by the samiti not to allow any unfamiliar persons to loiter in the locality.
