MUMBAI: The Shiv Sena, it appears, is leaving no stone unturned in its quest to score over the MNS.

In a bid to woo the families of police personnel, the Sena has launched a signature campaign in support of the cops convicted in the Lakhan Bhaiya case. Sainiks had reportedly put up posters backing the convicted policemen that were later removed by the civic body.

Last month, relatives of some cops found guilty in the fake encounter case met MNS chief Raj Thackeray. Raj offered to help them and slammed the Democratic Front government for not standing by the men in khaki. Days after the meeting, the Sena announced its signature campaign.

Nearly 40,000 policemen work in Mumbai and the administration has built 20,616 tenements for them, reveal home department records.

"Most of the families residing in the police quarters are Marathi-speaking. Ahead of the 2014 general and assembly polls, the Thackeray cousins are not only eying Marathi voters, but also trying to gain sympathy in the police force," said a political observer.

In July, a sessions court awarded life imprisonment to 13 policemen and eight others in connection with the fake encounter.
