Dams overflowing, yet no water in Vasai-Virar

MUMBAI: Despite heavy rainfall and dams overflowing, residents of the Vasai-Virar region are getting inadequate water supply.

Vasai Virar Municipal Corporatin (VVMC) officials blame it on choked water pipelines following heavy rains and release of excess water from dams.

The region receives around 130 mld water daily from Surya, Pelhar and Usgaon. With heavy rains, the dams reached their overflow capacity ahead of time. Civic sources said that intake pipelines are choked due to fallen trees and sand.

Civic workers are finding it difficult to reach the pipelines as the dam water have been released. Civic officials said that the Maswan pumping station was under water after the Surya dam was opened. Apart from choking the intake pipelines, only two of the three pumps are able to pull water.

The frequent power cuts has only worsened the situation. Civic officials said that the overflow level is around six feet above the dam's wall, making it difficult for workers to visit the location for repair and maintenance work.
