MUMBAI: The BEST buses in the city plan to use GPS system to provide a host of commuter-friendly facilities.
Recently, the BEST administration extended the GPS-based sms facility for 1,500 buses (including AC) on routes in island city and suburbs. It will help you find out the exact time a bus would arrive at a stop by simply sending a sms from your mobilephone.
In the past, this facility was restricted to a few buses, mainly in the island city. But you can now get the expected time of arrival (ETA) of 1,500 buses by sending the bus stop code number to a dedicated helpline. Within seconds, you will receive a sms informing you about the buses and the ETA.
Type BEST followed by space, then type the bus stop's five-digit code, and send the message to 56060. Within seconds, an SMS with the necessary information will arrive on your mobile.
BEST general manager Om Prakash Gupta said that the GPS-based commuter services were running successfully and there will be more facilities in near future. "We also plan to use this technology to install electronic display indicators at bus stops,'' he said. There are around 6,000 bus stops in Mumbai and the indicators will give a ETA of all buses arriving at that particular stop__similar to the indicators used for trains.
Said Gupta, "Each indicator will cost us Rs 2,500. While the technology is available with us, we are just looking at raising funds for this project. It will really help passengers who want to know when the next bus will arrive."
The GPS facility is also being used to keep track on movement of all buses. The hand-held ticketing machine of the conductor is also connected to a centralised database using GPS. "This helps us keep track on number of tickets sold on a particular route and the number of passengers travelling. We can get real-time data,'' an official said.
The officials also plan to equip bus drivers with GPS handsets so that they can communicate with BEST control room in emergency situations. On the lines of suburban train, BEST will soon make announcements in the bus informing commuters of the next stop arriving. The BEST has installed 1,000 LCD screens in its buses. Using the GPS service, the name of the next bus stop will be flashed on the screen and also announced. The service will be launched in the coming weeks.
