Power bills for June sold to scrap dealer

MUMBAI: A heap of June electricity bills of Nalasopara consumers is believed to have been sold to a newspaper scrap dealer. The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) has initiated an inquiry into the missing bills.

The matter was bought to the notice of the power generation company by a local activist Pardeshi Karmakar, who stumbled upon a current bill while having vada pav at a roadside stall early this week. The bill dated June 17 had the payment date of July 8, 2013. Karmakar (40) inquired with the vada pav seller about the bills. He told Kamlakar that the bills were given to him by the local newspaper scrap dealer at Tanki road in Nalasopara (east).

Karmakar approached the scrap dealer and found several more bills with him. All the bills were of June and had payment dates of July 8. The scrap dealer told Karmakar that the bills were brought to him by an unidentified person. The scrap dealer paid Rs 200 for the bundle.

MSEDCL sources said that over 2,000 bills may have reached the scrap dealer. The bills were mainly from the Vijay Nagar, Tuling Road, Tanki Road and Oswal Nagari in Nalasopara (east).

Karmakar made an application to the Nalasopara police regarding finding current month electricity bills. He also alerted MSEDCL officials. "This is a serious lapse as the bills carrying residential addresses of consumers can be misused for purchasing SIM cards and PAN cards," said Karmakar.

Executive Engineer Balasaheb Halnor said that the bills found from the scrap dealer and those that landed in the hands of Karmakar have been taken. He said that an inquiry has been initiated to find out how the bills reached the scrap dealer. MSEDCL is inquiring whether the bills were sold by an employee.

Sources said that the bills may have been unofficially outsourced to some locals for distribution by MSEDCL distribution staff, which may have then landed at the scrap shop instead of the homes of the consumers.
