MUMBAI: Sending out a stern message to laggards in civic projects, the BMC has imposed a hefty fine of Rs 1 lakh per day for each day's delay in finishing the revamp of Dr R N Cooper Hospital in Vile Parle.

The municipal corporation started levying the penalty on Unity Infrastructure from June 16 this year, which means the contractor has already incurred a fine of Rs 32 lakh.

The penalty is likely to go up further since only 80-85 % of the work is over, said civic officials.

Unity Infrastructure was engaged in 2009 to revamp Cooper Hospital. The initial deadline for the Rs 266-crore project was November 2012. The civic body later extended it to June 15, 2013.
