BEST panel want to encourage women self-employed groups

MUMBAI: BEST committee member SrinivasTripathi has demanded that local (Marathi) self-employed women should be given priority when it came to procuring non-technical items for the transport undertaking.

"We need to encourage the self-employed women from the Bachat gats in the state. If BEST needs to procure small items at the depots like towels, brooms, etc, we should procure them from the Bachat gats,'' he demanded at the committee meeting.

He further stated that encouraging the women, who were from low-income group, would mean giving them a hope to stand on their own feet. "We can give them contracts on a permanent basis,'' he said.

Shiv Sena member Sunil Ganacharya said that inviting tenders and getting bids from big companies (for small items) was a lengthy process. "I agree that local women co-operatives should be given a priority. They should be appointed by the BEST through a simple procedure,'' he added.
