Mumbai University goof-up makes it tough test for students

MUMBAI: Something is terribly rotten in Mumbai University, the country's second oldest. The ongoing exams have been a time of trauma and pain for thousands of students because of the constant goof ups by the university.

Glaring errors in questions papers or wrong papers dispatched to the wrong exam centres over the past few days has further damaged the reputation of this once premier educational institution. Students who are in a state of high anxiety and nervousness hardly deserve such distractions when they sit down to write their papers.

The latest goof-up was on Tuesday when more than 10,000 students of BCom Accounts and Finance were shocked to find the 60 marks paper full of errors. Although the error was rectified within 45 minutes, many students are worried they may not fare well. Some blame this fiasco on the teachers' strike, which has paralysed work since the past two months.

But the rot runs much deeper. Last year too, the exam season was wrecked with incidents of hall tickets not reaching on time, examination centres being changed at the last minute and question papers leaking. Educationists say the downfall begun two decades ago and calls for an urgent revamp have gone unheard.

Some years ago, the eminent historian Aroon Tikekar wrote an open letter to the university chancellor, requesting him to save this "once reputed institution from the clutches of bureaucracy and to allow it to breathe freely once again so that it can regain its academic health." "I am not against a healthy relationship between the university and the state as well as the central government—indeed, taking proper care of the academic health of universities like that of Mumbai has become absolutely necessary in the wake of foreign universities displaying an eagerness to set up branches in India. But a give-and-take relationship is one thing, iron control another," Dr Tikekar had rightly said.
