MUMBAI: Quick action on the part of two patrolling policemen helped nab a chain-snatcher at Malad East on Thursday after he had attacked a senior citizen. The accused, Shivaji Shelke, had hidden the stolen gold chain in his mouth, officials said.
The complainant, Naina Shukla, 60, is a resident of Malad East. On Thursday evening, she went to fetch her grandson from school. The duo had reached Laxman Nagar near Duttawadi around 4.15 pm. Suddenly, Shelke, 27, accosted Shukla. He slapped her hard across her face and pushed her down. Her grandchild watched in horror as Shelke snatched Shukla's 1 told gold chain. He began to flee when Shukla managed to recover and raised an alarm.
Two beat marshals from the Kurar police station, Vijay Sankpal and Vilas Parab, were patrolling the area. They were alerted by Shukla's screams and spotted Shelke getting away. The two constables chased Shelke and managed to overpowered him. They frisked him but couldn't find the stolen chain till they realized that Shelke had hidden it in his mouth. The chain was recovered and Shelke was hauled to the Kurar police station where he was booked on charges of robbery.
