"The Eastern Freeway is one of the more significant projects which is divided in three parts - One, the corridor from the Orange Gate to the beginning of Anik-Panjarpol Link Road; Two, the corridor from Anik to the beginning of Panjarpol-Ghatkopar Link Road and Three, Panjarpol to Ghatkopar. The twin tunnels are the highlight of this project and will help ease vehicular movement towards Navi Mumbai, Pune, Thane and Nasik", said Dilip Kawathkar, Joint Project Director (PR), MMRDA.
The 9.29-km long first part of the Eastern Freeway and the 4.3-km long Anik-Panjarpol Link Road will be thrown open in May, 2013 and together will provide 13.59-km signal-free connectivity to the Mumbaikars and ease their traffic woes to a great extent.
The eastern freeway is the city's most ambitious and much awaited project in terms of traffic decongestion as the road is expected to decongest entire eastern road corridor of the city which comprises of Dr Ambekdar road, the P D Mello road and the Port road. The traffic worth Rs 1200 crore has been partly funded by the centre under the Jawharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
