High court to hear school's plea to allow kids to use lift

MUMBAI: Bombay high court on Tuesday will hear a petition by parents of a school in Colaba for for direction to a trustto allow pre-primary students to use the lift to reach their classrooms on the fourth and sixth floors. The lift has been out of order for over a year.

Dunne's Institute its pre-primary section consisting of playschool, nursery, lower and upper kindergarten on the higher floors of K R Cama Oriental Institute Building opposite Lions Gate.

According to the petition, in February 2012 the school wrote to the landlord K R Cama Trustfor speedy action saying students mostly aged two and half to six years are climbing the stairs and facing hardships. Letters were also addressed to the local civic ward office, Public Works Department and to the Azad Maidan Police complaining about the extreme negligence of the trustees. An appeal was also made by the Parent Teacher Association saying the health of innocent children is being endangered as they run risk of harming their spine and knee in the long run with heavy school bags.'' After sending a lawyer's notice to the Truston March 21, 2013, the parents moved high court.
