Mayor Sunil Prabhu said, "The names of Shewale as standing committee chairman and Yashodhar Phanse as House Leader were announced in the meeting held on Monday at Matoshree in the presence of party chief Uddhav Thackeray."
Before Shewale's tenure as standing committee chairman, his party mate Waikar had held the position for four successive times during the period 2006-07 to 2009-10. The standing committee is the most important committee in the civic body, which controls the financial transactions and approves all project proposals.
Like previous year, the education committee will be held by the BJP, the other partner in the ruling alliance in the BMC.
On Monday, Shewale and BJP's Manoj Kotak filed their nominations to the municipal secretary Narayan Pathade as a candidate for Sena-BJP alliance for the chairmanship of civic standing committee and education committee respectively for the year 2013-14.
For the opposition, Jyotsna Dighe and Shivanand Shetty from Congress will contest the elections for the standing and education committee respectively.
The election of Shewale and Kotak is a foregone conclusion due to Sena-BJP's comfortable majority in the civic body.
