BMC cites paucity of funds for not building sports complexes in Mumbai

MUMBAI: The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), which boasts of a huge budget of over Rs 27,000 crore, does not have the funds to set up sports complexes in the city for the recreation of its citizens.

Instead it has pinned its hopes on funds from state or Central government for the project.

There have been demands to construct sports complexes, where Mumbaikars can have leisure and recreation in their busy lives. However, the civic body has turned down the demand saying it is too costly to build such sports complexes. It can be considered only if we get funds from the State Government or the Centre, said the civic officials.

In 2009, the then BJP corporator Bharati Keni had tabled a notice of motion in the civic general body meeting asking the BMC to set up sports complexes on vacant civic plots in the city. She had said, "The population of city, especially in the suburbs, has increased many fold in last couple of decades. However, there are not much sports complexes to organise cultural as well as sporting activities for people. The BMC should build sports complexes for their convenience."

The notice of motion was approved in the civic general body meeting and sent to the civic administration for remarks. However, the administration has turned down the demand saying that the cost of setting up a sports complex is too exorbitant and the BMC cannot afford it.

In its remarks, the civic administration has said, "The estimated cost of a sports complex is at least Rs 150 crore, which is too high. In addition to this, the daily maintenance cost of these complexes is also not affordable."

In future, if the civic body gets funds from the sports departments of state or central governments, we can consider the demand of setting up sports complexes in the city, said civic officials.
