MUMBAI: Surya David John, the 27-year-old theft convict, who fled from the Byculla prison on Monday morning was re-arrested by the railway protection force (RPF) late on Tuesday night while John was fast asleep on a bench at Churchate railway station.

John was later handed over to the Nagpada police which has registered a case of convict being escaped from the custody. "When asked his identity and name by the RPF, John tried to flee and was nabbed. Later, he admitted that he had fled from the jail," said a source. John was brought to the Byculla jail 10 days ago. He was convicted for theft on March 28 for a month and was to be released on April 28.

The incident took place at around 10.15am on Monday. Five police constables chased John who ran from the jail but failed. The policemen could not catch John who proved to be fastest than the cops. "There are reports that he was a drug addict and might have fled due to the non-availability of drugs," said a policeman.
