MUMBAI: Arvind Kejriwal's Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has expressed solidarity with activist Medha Patkar who is on an indefinite fast at Santa Cruz to protest unjust demolition of slums in Mumbai.

In a statement, the AAP has said that slum rehabilitation has become of the biggest scams in Mumbai as the government has authorised private builders to redevelop slum land.

"The developers are only interested in freeing up those land and selling it off in the property market for huge sum of money. This has led to lakhs of low-income families living in slums struggling for their basic right to a house. We endorse the andolan's demand that the work in all these SRA projects should be stopped until the report of the enquiry, under the chairmanship of principal secretary - Housing, which is in progress since 13th January 2013, is completed and actions taken on those recommendations," AAP said in a press release.

The government, it said, has betrayed its earlier commitment to the affected people and has recently let demolition drive proceed while enquiry is yet to complete. "We demand that the government sticks to its promise and do a thorough and transparent enquiry in this matter," reads the press statement.
