Minority community approaches chief minister over road widening plans

MUMBAI: Dolphy D'Souza who represents a residents' group from Malad a Mumbai suburb, has this week written to the chief minister to seek withdrawal of acquisition notices issued to St Anthony's Church, Malwani, Malad West for road widening and to Our Lady of Assumption Church, Kandivali for a nullah widening project of the civic administration. The community also sought cancellation of an acquisition notice issued to Sacred Heart Church, Santacruz.

D'Souza said that the Minority Community has been given a step-motherly treatment by the Mumbai Municipal Corporation. He said the Municipal chief Sitaram Kunta had assured residents in January during his visit to the Church to get more information on the malad-Marve road widening issue as it affects close to 2500 school children.

The MC was shown documents from various civic departments that were contradictory. The community said that the aim was to save a 400 year old heritage Church structure in Malad. They pointed out that a 2007 road widening proposal in Bandra which similarly affected three heritage sites was re-aligned from 90 feet to 60 feet to save the structures.

The primary cause of traffic obstruction is the illegal hawkers and illegal parking without which the vehicular movement can be smooth, the CM was told.
