Mumbai's iconic monument joined other landmarks around the world in celebrating the patron saint of Ireland who had introduced Christianity into that country in the fourth century.
St Patrick's Day is observed worldwide on March 17.
"Each year, international landmarks like the Sydney Opera House, Niagara Falls, Leaning Tower of Pisa, Empire State Building, the Prince's Palace of Monaco, Burj al Arab in Dubai and Table Mountain in South Africa take on the colour green in honour of the preacher who brought Christianity to Ireland in the fourth century. This year the Pyramids of Giza, the statue of Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro and that of the Little Mermaid in Copenhagen will be lit up as will the Gateway of India," said Huzan Fraser of Tourism Ireland.
Prashant Chari of the event management firm handling the project said, "We have placed green lights on the ground near the Gateway to shine upon the archway. This is a Grade I heritage structure so not a single piece of equipment actually touches the walls."
Born into a wealthy family of priests, St Patrick was kidnapped by Irish raiders as a boy and sold into slavery.
However, he escaped and later became preacher of the gospel and then bishop.
St Patrick used the metaphor of the three-leaf clover or shamrock to symbolise the Holy Trinity, which is said to bring luck to the wearer this day.
Interestingly, some people relax Lenten observances this day as it is customary to drink Irish beer and whiskey.
Pubs in Mumbai are catching onto the trend as well. Manchester United Cafe Bar is putting together a green-themed party including shamrocks, leprechauns and a 'pot of gold' lotto, not to mention day-long happy hours and free drinks on Sunday.
