Security at Juhu airport still a concern

MUMBAI: The recent terror threats to the city have once again put Juhu airport under the security scanner. Juhu airport has been one of the most vulnerable aerodromes in the city.

Even though the airport handles about 100 helicopter movements daily, the security there has been negligible. Officials said that a slum has expanded into the airport and is within meters from the secondary runway. The hutment dwellers from the neighbourhood hop across to play or even sleep on the runway.

Though a boundary wall is slowly being constructed, the progress has been really slow. The airport officials have also sought help from the local police to guard the premises. "Proper baggage scanning machines have to be installed. Security forces have to be sanctioned to patrol and guard the area," said an official from the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Officials said that AAI has a master plan to develop Juhu airport but it will take years before it can be implemented. "Before that proper security has to established. Today only harmless people sneak into the airport, tomorrow it can be someone with a malicious intent," said an official. Officials said that thefts of aircraft parts are very common, particularly in the Pawan Hans hangar which is closest to the slums.
