The fraud transaction sum was nullified and Majumdar's credit card account was re-credited. In the complaint, Majundar told the bank that someone cloned his card and used it physically to swipe at different shops a total nine times in the US on January 5. He received nine SMS alerts the next day. At the time of the fraud, Majumdar was physically present at his Navi Mumbai residence.
The bank informed Majumdar about the reversal done in his card on February 19 via email. TOI on February 5 reported the case, 'Man in Mumbai, card used in US to shop for Rs 1.17 lakh'.
"The bank settled the matter and credited my account with the total money debited from my credit card on January 5," Majumdar told TOI.
Alarmed by the fraud, Majumdar complained to the bank. Days later, he was dealt another blow: the bank allegedly asked him to pay up about 95% or Rs 1.12 lakh of the Rs 1.17 lakh fraudulently spent in the US. Majumdar's bank statement showed that on January 5, his credit card was used in the US' east coast at various outlets. In nine transactions, more than $2,000 was spent there while, according to Majumdar, he was in Mumbai.
Majumdar had lodged complaint both with the bank and the cyber police on January 6. "We are probing the matter. The fraud has taken place in the US and it is a long procedure to get in touch with that country's government. By that time, the accused goes scot-free," said a cyber police officer.
