BEST telephone operator gets President's medal

MUMBAI: A BEST telephone operator, Ravindra Wadekar, who is also active in civil defence, was honoured with the President's medal for meritorious service on Republic Day recently.

Wadekar, who is working in the transport undertaking for several years, was also felicitated by the BEST general manager Om Prakash Gupta at the committee meeting this week.

"It is a matter of pride that Wadekar was among the five in the state to get the medal for meritoirous service," said Gupta.

BEST spokesperson Manoj Varade said that Wadekar has been actively involved in helping victims of the bomb blasts in Mumbai. He was a volunteer, assisting victims after the serial blasts of 1993. In the subsequent blasts too, including the 26/11, he was part of the Civil Defence team which rushed victims to hospital and also helped in relief and rescue work.

"For me, it is a selfless job. I am glad the government has recognised my efforts. I am also proud to be a recepient of the medal," he stated.
