"The convention had speakers discussing about the future challenges in ensuring road safety on our state and national highways."
The AIMTC had undertaken a massive campaign against overloading and drunk driving during the Road Safety Fortnight last month. "We had tipped off transport officials about the errant drivers and got several of them booked. The AIMTC has taken up road safety as a priority in 2013," he stated.
On Saturday, it organised a national-level convention on road safety at a prominent hotel in Amritsar and this was attended by Sukhbir Singh Badal, deputy chief minister of Punjab, with other prominent guests such as Bikram Singh Majithia, cabinet minister for revenue & rehabilitation and Darshan Singh Kang, MLA (Alberta, Calgary Canada).
Others present were Manjit Singh GK, president of Shiromani Akali Dal Badal, Delhi and Nalin Mehta, managing director of Mahindra Navistar Automotives Limited.
After the convention, Singh also spoke about the imminent fallout vis-a-vis of de-control of diesel price and toll issue.
"The increase in diesel price will hit the common man as the cost of basic items will shoot up. Our apex body of transporters associations has made regular appeals to the government not to de-control the diesel price as the transport industry is not in the position to absorb it," he stated.
"Due to hike in diesel prices, the freight prices have gone up and are expected to shoot further. This will have a serious impact on the cost of transportation of essential commodities and other goods. The burden will be passed on to the common man, who will have to pay more for vegetables, fruits and others commodities," he added.
