MUMBAI: Thousands of people from the native East Indian community of Mumbai are expected to visit St Bonaventure Church in Erangal on Sunday for the annual feast.

The church is located at a picturesque spot along the seashore.

"Every year thousands of visitors arrive to pray at the church during this annual event. After that they make their way to the local fair where scores of people sell local produce and other goodies like specialty foods, musical instruments and music CDs," says Gleason Barretto of the Mobai Gaothan Panchayat (MGP).

The East Indians, who are the original inhabitants of Mumbai, have been visiting Erangal for centuries.

The fair is popularly known within the community as "Ergal cha Sann" or the Festival of Erangal.

"Many of the families who visit still follow the tradition of settling down at a nearby wadi (open place) to cook and eat together as family. This year MGP will be publicising the proposed projects for the community especially the East Indian museum," says Gleason.

This is perhaps the only feast where natives of 100 East Indian gaothans arrive to venerate St Bonaventure.
