Despite several complaints made by villagers to the police and Vasai tehsildar office no action was taken.
On Friday, hordes of villagers charged to the office of the tehsildar Vishwas Gujar. Villagers pointed out that mangroves were being burnt in the night hours as a result of which mangroves along with Suruchi trees were being destroyed.
The tehsildar contacted the Vasaigaon police that posted a team of cops in plainclothes near the mangroves in the wee hours of Saturday.
A man identified as Anil Vaidya was found loitering near the mangroves which were on fire. The police arrested him. Vaidya told the police that he was told to destroy the mangroves by one Vinod More, a resident of Velkar Nagar, Ghodbunder Road in Thane.
More and owner of a JCP Dhula Shinde are on the run.
Shinde had provided the JCP machine to clear out the destroyed mangroves and lay construction materials on the land.
Beginning January 5, the Vasai Virar Municipal Corporation (VVMC) has undertaken a tree census in the region to identity trees and mangroves and protect the environment.
