On Friday, Sunil Dhamne, the deputy municipal commissioner, education, said that the department has taken note of the points raised by the firebrigade while inspecting the civic schools and steps will be taken to implement their suggestion.
"We will begin with install fire extinguishers in all the civic schools," Dhamne said.
TOI on January 8 had reported that over two years after the fire department had inspected 812 schools for their fire safety, none of the schools had taken corrective steps and no compliance reports were submitted to the firebrigade so far.
According to the inspection report, several schools have glaring loopholes in the fire safety set up which could be a huge hazard in case of a fire. Loose wiring, refuge areas being used for other purpose, fire extinguishers not in working conditions are some of the discrepancies pointed out by the department.
"We have submitted a report to the Municipal Commissioner about the steps taken after that report. We will also send a copy to the firebrigade," Dhamne said.
The fire audits in schools were carried out in different cities of the country following the horrific 2004 incident in a Tamil Nadu school.
More than 90 children aged between eight and ten years were charred to death, when a major fire raged through their school in Kumbakonam town of Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district in 2004.
Around 900 students were present in the Sri Krishna Girls High School complex housing primary, middle and high schools.
