MUMBAI: Only three routes were profit making for the BEST undertaking in 2011-12 while just ten routes made profits in 2010-11. This was revealed by BEST committee member Ravi Raja during the budget discussions recently.
"This is shocking. We have 500 routes across the island city and suburbs and some of our buses ply as far as Thane and Navi Mumbai. But only three bus routes generated profits for us in 2011-12," Raja said. He further pointed out that the transport body had incurred losses on 55 % bus routes during the same period. "The remaining routes were neither profit nor loss (break-even). It is high time we ensure that our earnings surpass the expenses and we generate profits on all the 500 routes,'' he demanded.
A senior BEST official said that the costs of maintenance, repairs of buses and other costs (including loans for purchasing the buses) exceeded the earnings, and this was the reason why most of the routes were loss-making. "We have hiked the bus fares this year and it will be further hiked by a rupee from April. Our earnings will definitely increase and we expect to break even by April 2013,'' he said. The BEST also plans to cut down the fleet size (existing 4,607 buses) by 300 buses by early next year. The fleet utilization will be more on the road (expected to cross 90%) and efforts will be taken to increase the number of bus passengers travelling daily. The present BEST statistics revealed that the number of daily bus passengers in Mumbai had dropped from 43 lakhs in 2009-10 to to 39 lakh in 2011-12.
