MUMBAI: Taxi union leader A L Quadros has assured RTO officials that more than 5,000 taxis fitted with the e-meters will be recalibrated within the next ten days.
The RTO officials have begun taking action against taxi drivers who have failed to recalibrate the e-meters. They booked 50 drivers from across the island city and suburbs during the past six days. The cabbies were imposed with a fine of Rs 600 and their permits are also likely to be suspended for a few days.
"The purpose of the action was to create a deterrent for other drivers and compel them to rush for the recalibrations,'' said deputy RTO (Tardeo) Jeevan Bansod. However, in the past three days, the number of taxis arriving for recalibration did not exceed 300 cabs a day.
The RTO expects close to 1,000 taxis to arrive at the Worli test tracks daily. Quadros said that most meter repairer shops were closed a few days back and this was the reason why drivers were unable to install the new chips for the recalibration. "Just wait for a couple of days. You will find our drivers rushing to the Tardeo, Andheri and Wadala RTOs. They will get all the e-meters recalibrated,'' he stated.
As far as the mechanical meters were concerned, Quadros said that it would take over a month for the recalibration. "There is a shortage of new e-meters in the market. It will take some time for replacing all the existing mechanical meters with e-meters,'' he added. The taxi union has agreed for an extension of deadline to January 15, but the government is yet to take a decision. Ends
