MUMBAI: A 35-year-old man was murdered by his friend over a spat while drinking at Malwani last Wednesday night. The deceased, Tanaji Kamble, used to stay at Charkop but would visit his older brother, Vasant, at Malwani frequently. During these visits, he got acquainted with Vasant's neighbour, Ranjeet Nepali, 30, who is the accused in the case.

According to the police, Tanaji and Ranjeet struck up a friendship and would hang out frequently. Last Wednesday, Tanaji and Ranjeet went to Ruia Compound at Rathodi village for drinking. After downing some liquor, Tanaji repeatedly asked Ranjeet to fetch snacks and water. Ranjeet did not like being ordered around and had an argument with Tanaji.

"Tanaji lost his cool as Ranjeet refused to get what he had told him to. He picked up a bamboo stick and attempted to strike at Ranjeet, but the latter had already picked up a stone. He bludgeoned Tanaji on the back of his head and fled with his cellphone. Tanaji bled profusely and died," a police officer said.

Local residents summoned the Malwani police after spotting the corpse. After identifying Tanaji, the police quizzed Vasant who told them that his brother was last seen with Ranjeet. Randhir was traced through his cellphone location and was arrested from Poisar in Kandivali.

Ranjeet is being interrogated further to find out if the two men had any previous rivalry or was the spat while drinking the sole motive.
