MUMBAI: Another failure at the Mumbai Races on Thursday has put a question mark on Classics potentials of An Acquired Taste. It was expected that this 3-year-old gelding will make amends for his setback in the Pune Derby last month where he had clipped the hind heels of the front running horse and had stumbled soon after the start and was injured badly.
But more than a month later, when he was contesting in the Rahimtoola Chinoy Trophy on Thursday, race-goers thought he would put up a good show and, as a result, was backed very well in the betting ring and was installed as a clear favourite. However, his poor third finish has again raised doubts over his ability to compete at the highest level. His thumping win in the Bangalore Summer Million seems a fluke.
However, there are many who think that An Acquired Taste should be given another chance as he may have still not recovered fully since the Pune setback. Many also are of the opinion that the other good contender from ace trainer Pesi Shroff's yard Ambrosia in the same race also failed to perform up to the expectation as 10/1 shot Sumo had already gone ahead for a clear win and the failure of both An Acquired Taste and Ambrosia should simply be treated a common bad day that every horse goes though.
