MUMBAI: The public transport in Mumbai has returned to normalcy and autos and taxis are doing brisk business during weekend unlike Thursday, when nearly 90% of them were off the roads.
On Thursday morning, when there was news of Shiv Sena supremo Bal Thackeray's health deteriorating, a majority of auto and taxis stayed off the roads till evening. Sources said that drivers incurred collective losses to the tune of over Rs 2 crore on that day. The autos and taxis, however, returned on roads subsequently as news spread about Thackeray's condition being stable.
"But the cabbies lost a day's business. They didn't want to take a risk, which is why they stayed away. Had there been some stone pelting or any law and order problemn our drivers would have incurred huge losses__anywhere between Rs 5,000 and Rs 8,000 (cost of windscreen glass)," said an union leader.
"But by staying away, they lost a part of the day's income," he stated. There are around 30,000 taxis plying in Mumbai and nearly a lakh autos. The BEST buses witnessed stray incidents of stone pelting, with two cases at Lalbaug, one at Andheri and another one at Sion. Nobody was injured in these incidents and it was not clear why the buses were pelted, a BEST official said. The bus fleet was subsequently reduced by 30%, but the services returned back to normal on Friday morning.
The buses, however, made good profits on Thursday as maximum passengers, specially those who were out to celebrate Bhau- beej depended on buses for travel in the absence of the autos and taxis, the sources added. The trains too were running as per schedule on that day although the number of commuters had dropped by more than 50%.
