MUMBAI: Fleetcabs will soon begin to charge as per the revised rates as the e-meters are being recalibrated as per the new tariff. The state transport department had recently given an interim hike of three rupees to the fleetcab operators.
As per the new rates, the minimum fare has gone up from Rs 24 to Rs 27 and the fare for every subsequent km has gone up from Rs 17 to Rs 20. According to a TabCab official, though the fares came into effect more than a week ago, the new rates will be charged only in those taxis whose meters have been recalibrated.
So, if you are lucky to board a taxi whose meter has not been recalibrated, you can continue to travel by the old fares. But most taxis have now got their meters recalibrated and the drivers will begin to charge the new rates. The city has about 4,500 fleet taxis, with a majority (more than 2,000 cabs ) belonging to Meru Cabs. The second biggest operator is TabCabs with 1,600 cabs. It aims to surpass Meru Cabs hby introducing at least 1,000 new taxis in next few months, sources said. Other fleet taxis include Easy Cabs, Mega Cabs, Viira Cabs and Priyadarshini.
Sources said that there was a shortage of fleet taxis in Mumbai. The city needed at least 10,000 fleetcabs to meet the growing demand of passengers, specially those travelling to the airport.
