MUMBAI: Alarmed with rising number of complaints against hawkers nuisance especially those doing business on railway bridges and subways, home minster R R Patil called up BMC commissioner Sitaram Kunte and Sadanand Date joint commissioner of police (law and order) and instructed them to have coordinated drive to remove hawkers.
"I am of the opinion that hawkers problem is a social issue. One cannot dislodge these hawkers without making alternate arrangement for them in the system. But at least illegal hawkers from the railway foot-over-bridges and subways should be removed immediately as they cause huge discomfort to the commuters. Accordingly, I have instructed police and BMC officials to coordinate with railway authorities and initiate a prolong drive to resolve the issue," Patil said.
A senior home department official welcomed the move. "It has been observed that illegal hawkers creates hurdles in the movement of the commuters and even in some cases prevent access to railway stations. In case of occurrence of any untoward incident then this could lead to stampede. Hence removing hawkers from the railway premises is the much needed exercise," the official added.
But Mantralaya wags are little sceptical about sustaining the anti-hawkers drive. "After the directives from Patil, civic and police officials may evict the hawkers. But going by the past experiences of such eviction drive, our observation is that hawkers are back into business few days after the action. In this case too how long the drive will last is what needs to be watched," a senior Mantralaya official added.
