MUMBAI: The Tardeo, Andheri and Wadala RTOs issued showcause notices to more than 200 taxi and auto drivers for not carrying original tariff cards in the past two weeks.
"We are following the high court directive, which stipulates that every driver should prominently display the tariff card in the vehicle,"as officer said.
The card can either be pasted on the back of the driver's seat or it can be pasted on the windscreen. Some of the drivers have complained about children tearing the original cards if it is pasted on the back of the seat. The RTO has, however, offered to laminate the cards and issue them to drivers.
"It is mandatory for every driver to carry an original set of tariff cards and display the same for passengers. Carrying a xerox copy of tariff card is illegal and commuters can lodge complaints either with the traffic police or on the RTO tollfree helpline 1800-22-0110,'' an officer from Tardeo said. He further stated the colour of the card is very important. A mechanical meter in taxi will have a yellow colour tariff card while it will be blue for an e-meter in taxis. For autos, the colour of the card is white for e-meter and blue for mechanical meter, RTO officials said.
Several taxi and auto unions such as those led by A L Quadros, Prem Singh and Thampy Kurien are encouraging drivers to paste the original tariff cards behind the seats. Consumer activists, however, complained that 60 per cent of vehicles still dont have tariff cards prominently displayed for passengers.
