Senior police official transferred in Mumbai

MUMBAI: A deputy police commissioner of traffic division has been transferred after an internal inquiry into the ruckus outside the NSCI club where policemen jostled with members to prevent their entry during a function attended by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, indicted him.

DCP Keshav Patil, attached to the Traffic division, has been transferred as DCP headquarters (II). The report compiled by additional commissioner of police, R D Shinde, stated that the situation could have been handled better. The report was submitted to Rakesh Maria, city police commissioner, who later transferred the DCP. The incident had taken place on March 1 and next day Maria had ordered the probe.
On the day of the incident, there was a bad traffic jam and the policemen failed to control the chaos. It was alleged that the traffic cops at the NSCI Club at Worli had stopped several private vehicles to make way for Fadnavis' convoy and video footage showed them grappling with some of the club members, including an elderly person. While the incident triggered an outrage over people being inconvenienced, Opposition parties attacked Fadnavis over the mismanagement. Later, Fadnavis had apologised for the melee.

Maria confirmed about the report and action taken. Police sources said that report elaborated on arrangements made for the CM's convoy at the venue and subsequent developments that triggered the commotion and highlighted the lacuna on the part of the police while giving recommendations to avoid repeat of such incident. "The report included the details sought from NSCI club and the recorded statements of the police personnel deployed at the venue," said another officer. The inquiry report suggested that the situation could have been handled better.
