MUMBAI: The Bombay high court on Thursday disposed of a PIL after the Centre accepted Maharashtra government's recommendation to include Mephedrone in the prohibited drugs list. The centre informed a bench headed by Chief Justice Mohit Shah that a G.R has been issued modifying the list and that the Parliament too had given it's nod to prohibit the drug, the latest rage among addicts, mostly teens, as a 'recreation drug' sold as MD.

The court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by Dr Yusuf Merchant to include the drug under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act so that its use is banned, restricted and penalised. Counsel for the state Hiten Venegaonkar informed a bench headed by the Chief Justice Mohit Shah that the state had supported a representation and forwarded it to the Centre. Additional Solictor general Anil Singh informed the bench then that the Centre considered and accepted it.

Dr Merchant who has been rehabilitating addicts for decades in the city, said Mephedrone or MD or M-Cat as it is popularly called is basically a plant fertiliser that is being abused by the youth. "Since it is not under the NDPS Act, it is promoted openly as a plant fertiliser on the internet," Merchant, wrote to police and the Home Ministry, to point out that the cheaply available drug is more potent and causes in one year the harm that heroin does in ten years.
