MUMBAI: Catholic schools in the city will not stay shut on Wednesday and instead have a special assembly next week. Catholic groups had called for the closure to protest against the attack on a church in New Panvel and the rape of a nun in West Bengal.

"We do not want to cause any inconvenience to the students and the administration with the exams coming up. So we have decided not to keep schools shut on Wednesday," said Fr George Athaide, secretary of Archdiocesan Board of Education (ABE), which governs over 150 schools in the city.

The ABE will send out material to the schools to hold an half an hour assembly on Monday. "We need to take up the cause and make students aware of the religious tolerance and harmony. So we are preparing material to give to schools for a special assembly that they will conduct next week," said Athaide.
