MUMBAI: For the past year, several senior citizens who love old Hindi songs have been meeting at a school in Wadala where they invite professional musicians and indulge their passion for singing on the microphone. Now they are ready to unfurl their plumes at a public concert at Mysore Auditorium, Matunga, on Friday.

Advocate Yusuf Muchhala is revising the notes of Raag Bageshri for 'Jaag dard-e-ishq jaag'. Befitting his status as the seniormost member of the group, the 80-year-old will sing the oldest song of the show, 'Milte hi aankhen dil hua' which dates back to 1950. "I enjoyed singing since my childhood and performed on stage during my college days. But law is a jealous mistress that does not allow you to nurture any other interest. Since I retired I am able to devote time to my hobby," he said.

The troupe named Hummingbirds includes professionals from all walks of life. Dr A L Sharda runs an NGO named Laadli. Pravin Shringarpure (66) retired as general manager of Mumbai Port Trust. He is among those who have more experience on the professional stage. "I am learning classical music and have started performing the songs of S D Burman, Madan Mohan and Mehdi Hassan. On Friday I will sing 'Humne toh dil ko aapke qadmon mein rakh diya' and 'Palkon ke peechhe se'," he said.

The master of ceremonies is R Parthasarathy (57) who anchored the annual function of Agarwal Classes where he worked for 37 years. He is rehearsing 'Aaj kojunli raat maan' and 'Jai jai Shiv Shankar'. He said, "Most members defected from a group named Swaranjali where we sang with a tabla and harmonium. We wanted to graduate to the keyboard and include more rhythm but since that did not work out, we formed our own group. In our first year we have been able to hire a 290-seater hall," he said. His daughter is not enamoured by old Hindi music but is keen to record Friday's concert. Bageshri,Jaag dard-e-ishq jaag,Hindi songs
