MUMBAI: The upset vendors in the city are worried about the arrest of two vendors for selling a newspaper that printed Prophet Mohammed's blasphemous cartoons. "There should be a law to protect us. What is our crime? Just by selling newspaper to earn bread and butter we will be arrested?" several vendors raised the similar question.

The JJ Marg police last week arrested two vendors — Shareef Shaikh (60) and Salaman Shaikh (18) — for selling a newspaper that carried the cartoons. "What is our fault? We sell thousands of newspaper copies and books daily. We don't read them. When some cartoons were printed and in which newspaper, we don't even remember," said one of Shareef's relatives. The duo got bail of Rs 7,000 each after spending a night at the police station's lock up.

Although the police chief, Rakesh Maria, has ordered an inquiry into the arrest episode, the vendors are disturbed. "Until we are discharged from the case, we will feel guilty," said Shareef. Maria is learnt to have been upset with the police action. The case against the vendors was filed by Riyaz Chaali, trustee of a local mosque, on January 29 and there were reports he was pressuring the police to arrest the duo. "The cartoons have hurt our religious sentiments," Chaali said in his complaint.

The JJ Marg police will be filing an application before the Sewree under section 169 of the CrPC requesting the police to discharged Shareef and Salman from the case. It could be done soon after the police chief gets the inquiry report from C H Wakade, additional commissioner of police (Special Branch). Another vendor said that they sell multi-language newspapers and books and don't even understand what is written there. "If it's the case the police should arrest all those who read it. However, we have been made scapegoat," said the vendor. The vendors are likely to meet the senior police officials on this issue.

A vendor in south Mumbai said that several newspaper write different things and sometimes the writer is booked too. "However, this is the for the first time vendors have been booked. The government should make some law to protect us. We are poor people and cannot fight the court cases," urged the vendor.
