MUMBAI: Taking strong exception to the Centre stepping on the BMC's constitutional rights as a local self-government, the Shiv Sena which is the ruling party in the BMC has objected to the announcement to instal LED lights in the corporation headquarters.

The party has demanded that the project of installing LED lights be stayed.

Sena leader and former mayor Sunil Prabhu in a letter to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said it was unfortunate that instead of protecting the rights of the BMC, both the Centre and the state government have chosen to trample upon it.

Prabhu said under the BMC Act, 1888, it is the obligatory duty of the corporation to provide street lights. ``The LED lights are to be put by the Energy Efficiency Services Ltd, a central government organisation. Instead of making a unilateral announcement the Centre and state government should have taken the BMC into confidence and allowed it to do it by inviting tenders which would have further brought down the cost,'' he said.
