CM gives babus Davos deadline to push reforms

MUMBAI: Just days after constituting two independent committees, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis has now set a deadline for bureaucrats associated with the departments of revenue, power, urban development, industries, law and judiciary, sales tax, environment and the BMC to bring in administrative reforms to attract both domestic and foreign investment.

A cabinet member said on Saturday that after his marathon interaction with more than a dozen bureaucrats, Fadnavis made it clear that no time should be lost in introducing reforms in all sectors and cutting red tape.

"When Fadnavis addresses the World Economic Forum in Davos, he will tell investors that red-tapism and corruption are history in Maharashtra and now there will be a red-carpet welcome for them," the minister said. "So, bureaucrats have no option but to work on reforms on a war footing."

The Davos meeting is to get going on Wednesday.

Top bureaucrats like municipal commissioner S J Kunte, urban development secretary Nitin Kareer, industries secretary Apoorva Chandra, BEST GM Jagdish Patil, law and judiciary secretary M A Saheed and energy secretary O P Gupta held a meeting on the proposed reforms in their departments on Thursday. In his presentation, Patil assured Fadnavis that the waiting period of 67 days for a power connection in the city would be reduced to seven days. The MSEDCL proposed a cut from 110 days to 21 days.

"The World Bank report on ease of doing business had pointed out that BEST takes a minimum of 67 days for providing a power connection," an official said. "Reforms proposed by BEST will drastically cut the period to seven days and that too at a lower cost."

The sales tax department, revenue department, MPCB and MIDC also made a slew of important proposals.
