Victory for BJP as Sena pulls out from MBM chair election

MUMBAI: The standing committee chairperson post in the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation (MBMC) went to the Bharatiya Janata Party after the Shiv Sena withdrew its candidate and voted in favour of the BJP on Tuesday.

Last year the chairperson was from the BJP. This year it was to go to the Sena. However, with the shaky BJP-Sena alliance, both parties had fielded their candidate for the post. On Tuesday Sena's Harishchandra Aamgaonkar withdrew his candidature, making way for BJP's Prashant Keluskar, who won by eight votes as against Nationalist Congress Party's Naresh Patil who got seven votes.

Keluskar's victory was possible with BJP's four votes, Bahujan Vikas Aghadi's one vote and Sena's three votes. The NCP had to be content with seven votes after their corporator Vandana Patil resigned from the standing committee on Saturday.

Keluskar is known to be a close aid of BJP MLA Narendra Mehta. Aamgaonkar is close to Thane's Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik.
