Activists plan to meet CM over open spaces

MUMBAI: Open space activists on Monday drafted a resolution opposing a state cabinet decision permitting the use of public playgrounds for non-sporting activities for 45 days a year. The number of days earlier was 30.

The activists, who met at Dadar, discussed how the move would affect a huge part of the city, from children to adults, who make use of playgrounds for recreational purposes or regular morning walks.

Action for good Governance and Networking in India (AGNI), WECOM Trust, NAGAR and Swachh Harit Shivaji Park Abhiyaan drafted the resolution, which they plan to hand over to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis.

A campaign against the decision has drawn over 1,000 signatures, from members of residents' associations and others. NAGAR has written to Fadnavis on December 1 that it was an "anti-children and anti-citizen move".

AGNI convenor Gerson da Cunha said the main purpose of Monday's meeting was to bring to view the cabinet decision. "People need to be made aware of this; only then will they be able to come ahead and strongly oppose it. It's shocking that the government wants to extend the number of days from 30 to 45. Public playgrounds are not available to children during the four monsoon months, and a further 45 days not being available to the public, would mean that they will be denied the use of playgrounds for almost five and a half months. Besides, in most cases, when events are held, they take extra days to construct a pandal too," said da Cunha. He added that when events are organized, playgrounds are often damaged.

The groups plan to write to legislators too. WECOM member Ashok Ravat said an uproar against the decision could only get the government to withdraw it. "We are trying to get as many signatures as possible, to gather the right momentum. The government needs to think over it again," said Ravat.

King's Circle civic activist Nikhil Desai said they were keen on the government having a relook at the decision. "Playgrounds are the only public places which everyone can use, and we are keen on them being open for people for most days," said Desai.
