2 more donors from Mumbai offer UP toddler blood

A day after three units of the precious Bombay group were sent from Mumbai to Blood New Delhi's All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) for a 15-month-old toddler from UP , the surgery could not be carried out as scheduled. Doctors said treating Arun Kumar's grave congenital heart condition may require more units of blood.

An executive from Pune and two Mumbaikars had donated three units, which were couriered to Delhi on Thursday . The hospital said on Friday that carrying out the surgery without adequate blood backup would be risky and subsequently made a fresh request for an additional three units. By evening, Vinay Shetty of the Think Foundation NGO managed to gather two more persons who donated two more units. "The blood collected from Pravin Shinde (35) and Swapna Sawant (31) will be sent to Delhi on Saturday . Hopefully, the surgery can take place with this," he said.

Less than 190 people have the Bombay Blood group in India.Cardio-thoracic surgeon Dr A K Bisoi from AIIMS, who will be operating upon the child, told TOI that it was nothing less than a miracle that the child was alive. "This child is born with a reverse connection in the heart, called transposition of great arteries. The body does not get pure blood that is pumped from the lungs. It is an extremely lifethreatening complication and most children do not live beyond a few months of birth. By now the left side of his heart is very weak to pump blood to the whole body ," he said, adding that the child needs to undergo surgery at the earliest. "Each day is crucial for him," the surgeon said.

Bisoi added that while such surgeries can be performed with four units of blood, Kumar's case was exceptional. "We have to keep a backup as he cannot be transfused with blood from any other group. He may have to stay on the heart-lung machine for longer post-surgery ," said Bisoi. He applauded efforts by Mumbaikars and the Pune resident to save the child. "More awareness must be created about the rare blood group," he said.

Shetty suggested that blood banks in Delhi must create a registry, like in Mumbai, Hyderabad, Bangalore and Chennai.

Kumar's father Sandesh, a farmer from UP , said each passing day was causing them more anxiety . "We are running against time. It is such a helpless situation for us as well as the doctors," he said. Bisoi said the child will be taken in for surgery as soon as all units of blood are arranged for. The family has deposited Rs65,000 with the hospital for the procedure.
