MUMBAI: Days after a 27-year-old Shiv Sena worker was killed for intervening in a fight between two groups, assistant inspector Prasad Pitale and sub-inspector Nitin Khairnaar from the Dindoshi police station were suspended on Saturday for reportedly conducting shoddy probe.

The development comes a day after a peace meeting was organized in the locality on Friday to quell tension among the public. At the meet, people from various communities collected nearly Rs 8 lakh to help the family of the deceased, Ramesh Jadhav, who was murdered on October 21 when he tried to broker peace between a group of youths and a woman.

Five people, including a minor, have been arrested on charges of murder. Jadhav is survived by his wife, a daughter and mother.

"People from all committees contributed to help Jadhav's family. Some agreed to pay at least Rs1,000 a month to them," said DCP Punjabrao Ugle. "The peace meet has sent out a positive message for Hindu-Muslim unity. People promised to keep up this unity in future." Ex-Sena legislator Vinod Ghosalkar announced a contribution of Rs1 lakh. He said his party would also bear education expenses of Jadhav's daughter.
