Patade, 46, the deceased, resided on the 11th floor of Krishna Classic building with her husband, Jayprakash, and college-going daughter, Mansi. On Friday, Seema was at home alone after Mansi left for college. Jayprakash was in Konkan for Ganeshotsav. Around 5 pm, Mansi returned home and got no response from the house. She then opened the door and found her mother murdered on the bedroom bed, with blood oozing from her nose. Seema also had an injury on the back of her head. Her ornaments had been robbed but a gold mangalsutra was lying untouched nearby.
The Borivali police, probing the case, figured that the killer was known to Seema as there were no signs of a forced entrance. They went through CCTV footage of the society as well as quizzed 8 to 10 people known to the family. They also checked the cellphone locations of those quizzed and found that Karanjekar's location showed he was at Seema's apartment around 3.15 pm on Friday. He admitted to the murder and the robbed valuables are being recovered from him.
Karanjekar knew her Mansi since January 2014. Previously working in the catering industry, Karanjekar was currently unemployed and was in financial debts. He used to visit Mansi's house and was well-acquainted with her parents. Karanjekar stays at Meghwadi in Jogeshwari East with his father who is retired. They are not well off. He has three sisters who are married.
