Schools get education dept help to identify learning disability students

MUMBAI: The state education department has joined the Society for Rehabilitation of Crippled Children's (SRCC) Centre for Child Development to spread awareness about learning disability (LD) among city schools.

Addressing the first in the series of workshops for 100 school principals on Saturday, state education secretary Ashwini Bhide said, "While trying to understand why a student drops out from school, causes such as economic weakness, physical disability and the like are very easy to identify. But the difficult task is to identify differences in the ability to learn."

The state education department has extended its support to the Centre for Child Development's initiative to conduct workshops for principals and spread awareness about LD. The workshops will reach out to all schools in the city over the next one year.

Senior psychiatrist Dr Harish Shetty and clinical psychologist Samindara Sawant will prepare a tool kit for principals to help them create awareness among their teachers. Emphasizing the need identify LD at an early age, Sawant said, "The gap between what you think the child can do and what he/she is actually doing is the biggest sign for a teacher. It sometimes takes a few years of counselling before the parents come to terms with it but teachers can start giving provisions to the students even without a formal certification to make sure the child is not demoralized."

Principals also expressed the need to extend the provisions available to students with LD to slow learners (children with below average intelligence) as they can currently avail only 30 minutes extra during an exam.
